[뉴욕=AP/KNS] 오바마 정부가 대만의 F-16 전투기 역량을 강화하기 위한 585억 달러 무기 종합 정책을 발표했으나 공화당은 즉각 이 정책이 미국의 우방국을 과소평가하며 중국의 압력에 굴복하는 행위라고 반발했다.

적국인 중국 본토에 비해 약한 군사력을 지닌 대만은 오래된 다른 전투기를 교체하기 위해 미국으로부터 새로운 f-16기 또한 구입하고자 한다는 의사를 밝혔다. 미국 동아시아 상급 외교관인 커트 캠벨은 21일 미국 정부가 이 같은 요구 사항을 아직 고려 중이라고 전했으나 언제 결정이 내려질 것인지에 대해서는 언급하지 않았다.

미국은 1979년 의회를 통과한 법안에 따라 대만의 자기 방어를 위해 무기를 공급해야 하는 의무가 있다. 그러나 미국 정부는 떠오르고 있는 강대국인 중국과의 유대를 강화시키려 하면서 중국의 반응 또한 심사숙고 하고 있는 것으로 보인다.

중국 정부는 앞서 대만에 무기를 판매했다는 이유로 일시적으로 미국 정부와 군사동맹을 중단시켰다. 캠밸 외교관은 기자회견에서 “(미국의 정책은) 대만이 평상시는 물론 위기 상황에도 계속해서 영공을 방어할 수 있도록 도와줄 것”이라 전했다.

그러나 공화당은 이것이 중국에 대한 “항복”과 다름 없다며 미국의 모든 동맹국들이 우려할 상황이라고 비난했다.

오바마 정부는 지금 당장은 대만이 1990년대 미국으로부터 구입한 145 F-16 A/B 전투기를 업그레이드 해 줄 것만을 동의함으로써 조심스러운 선택을 했다. 아직도 이 전투기가 대만 공군 군사력의 중추를 담당하고 있어, 현재 대만은 중국 본토의 군사력에 비해 훨씬 낙후된 상황이다.

NEW YORK (AP) -- The Obama administration unveiled a $5.85 billion arms package to upgrade Taiwan's F-16 fighter jets and faced an immediate backlash 　　from Republicans who accused him of selling a U.S. friend short and caving in to Chinese pressure.

Taiwan, outgunned by rival mainland China, also wanted the U.S. to sell it new F-16s to replace its other aging warplanes. Senior U.S. diplomat for East Asia, Kurt Campbell, said Wednesday that request is still under consideration but gave no indication of when a decision would be reached.

The U.S. is obligated under legislation passed by Congress in 1979 to provide Taiwan weapons for its self-defense. But it also appears to be weighing the reaction of emerging superpower China, with which it has sought to deepen ties. Beijing has responded to previous arms sales to Taiwan by temporarily cutting military ties with Washington.

"This will help ensure Taiwan maintains the ability to defend its air space in both peace time and in any crisis," Campbell told a news conference. "We believe the approach that we have taken is prudent and careful and we will continue along those lines".

Political opponents quickly pounced on the decision. Republican Sen. John Cornyn 　　from Texas, 　　where the new F-16 planes would be built, declared it a "capitulation" to China that should be met with concern by U.S. allies every　　where. Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney declared it a show of "weak leadership in foreign policy."

The administration has hedged its bets by agreeing for now only to upgrade the 145 F-16 A/B fighter jets that Taiwan bought 　　from the U.S. in the 1990s. Those planes remain the backbone of its air power, which is now dwarfed by the mainland's.
