NEW DELHI, Sept. 23 (Xinhua) -- Smoking is a major cause of cancers in India, with more than 40 percent of cancers among them being caused by tobacco, reported The Times of India Friday.
The newspaper quoted Indian Council of Medical Research as saying that 44.4 percent of cancers in men in Kolkata are caused by tobacco, while 41.4 percent of cancers among men are caused by smoking in Chennai, 39.4 in Delhi and 39.2 percent in Mumbai.
Women ¡¡¡¡from Chennai record the highest number of tobacco related cancers with 15.2 percent, followed by Mumbai with 13.5 percent, Kolkata with 12.3 percent and Delhi with 11 percent.
In the southern metropolis of Bangalore, 35 percent of cancers in men and 14.3 percent of cancers in women are related to tobacco consumption, said the report.
