[워싱턴=AP통신/] 미국은 사우디아라비아 여성들이 국정자문 슈라회의에 다음 회기부터 정회원 자격을 갖게되고, 다음 회기 지방선거들에게 참여하는 것을 허락하는 사우디아라비아의 조치들을 환영했다.

"사우디아라비아의 압둘라 국왕에 의해 약속된 개혁들은 사우디아라비아에서 여성들 자신들이 속한 사회에 대한 의미 있는 기여가 될 것이라고 인정된다.

그리고 그들의 삶과 공동체에 영향을 미치는 결정들에 참여하는 새로운 방법들을 제공할 것이다" 라고 국가안전보장회의의 토미 비타 대변인이 말했다.

“오늘의 발표문은 사우디 아라비아에서 여성들의 권리를 확대하는 데 중요한 한 단계가 될 것이다,  우리는 압둘라 국왕과 사우디 국민들이 이번 개혁 및 다른 개혁들을 잘 수행할 수 있도록 지원할 것이다” 라고 비터 대변인이 말했다.

WASHINGTON, Sept. 25 (Xinhua) -- The White House on Sunday welcomed Saudi Arabia's move to allow women to serve as full members of the advisory Shura Council in the next session and participate in future municipal elections.

The reforms pledged by King Abdullah recognize the "significant contributions" women in Saudi Arabia make to their society and will offer them new ways to participate in the decisions that affect their lives and communities, National Security Council Spokesman Tommy Vietor said.

"The announcements made today represent an important step forward in expanding the rights of women in Saudi Arabia, and we support King Abdullah and the people of Saudi Arabia as they undertake these and other reforms," Vietor said in a statement.

Women in Saudi Arabia, in compliance with a strict version of Sunni Islam, have been banned 　　from traveling or driving without the consent of a male relative.

Rights activists have long been fighting for more rights for women. King Abdullah announced his decision in his address to the Shura Council, saying the kingdom refuses to marginalize females in all walks of the society. Enditem
