Japan reports $6.5 billion April trade deficit
TOKYO (AP) — Japan's trade deficit for April widened ¡¡from a year earlier as oil and gas imports surged after the nuclear crisis, the government said Wednesday.
The Finance Ministry reported a 520 billion yen ($6.5 billion) trade deficit for April, bigger than a 478 billion deficit in the same month of 2011.
Separately, the Bank of Japan on Wednesday left its key interest rate un¡¡changed at near zero to support growth, as widely expected.
Japan earlier this year reported its biggest annual trade deficit ever for the fiscal year ending March.
All of Japan's 50 nuclear power reactors are offline in the aftermath of a nuclear crisis set off in March 2011 by a massive earthquake and tsunami, forcing the country to rely on oil and gas-fired generation to supply electricity.
