[메사추세츠=AP/KNS] ‘프랭크 앤 루이’라는 이름의 고양이는 두 개의 얼굴과 입, 코, 그리고 세 개의 눈을 가지고 태어나 얼마나 오래 생존할 수 있을지 의문을 낳았다.

현재 주인인 마티 스티븐스가 안락사 위기에 놓인 고양이를 구출한지 12년이 지난 현재, 이 파란눈의 인형 같은 고양이는 건강할 뿐만 아니라 (로마신화에서 두 얼굴을 가진 신의 이름을 딴) 야누스 고양이들 중 가장 오래 산 고양이로 2012년판 기네스 세계기록에 이름을 올리게 되었다.

스티븐스는 “이러한 조건을 가지고 태어난 고양이들의 보통 수명이 하루에서 4일 사이인 것을 감안하면, 12살까지 살았다는 것이 매일 축복과 같다”고 말했다. ‘프랭크 앤 루이’의 원래 주인은 태어난 지 단 하루 만에 안락사를 시켜달라며 당시 스티븐스가 일하고 있던 터프츠 대학교의 수의학과로 데려왔다. 스티븐스는 자신이 이 고양이를 데려가겠다고 제안했지만 전문가들은 그녀에게 희망을 갖지 말라고 조언했다.

야누스 고양이들은 거의 모든 경우 살아남지 못하며 대부분 구개파열을 비롯해 치명적인 선천적 결함을 가지고 태어난다. 그러나 ‘프랭크 앤 루이’는 야누스 고양이들이 겪는 문제들 중 대부분을 피해갔다.

힘든 장애에도 불구하고 ‘프랭크 앤 루이’는 아주 온순한 성격을 지녀 “사람들에게 친근하게 대하고 실제로 고양이보다 개에 가깝다”고 스티븐스는 밝혔다.

WORCESTER, Mass. (AP) -- Frank and Louie the cat was born with two faces, two mouths, two noses, three eyes - and lots of doubts about his future.

Now, 12 years after Marty Stevens rescued him 　　from being euthanized because of his condition, the exotic blue-eyed rag doll cat is not only thriving, but has also made it into the 2012 edition of Guinness World Records as the longest-surviving member of a 　　group known as Janus cats, named for a Roman god with two faces.

"Every day is kind of a blessing; being 12 and normal life expectancy when they have this condition is one to four days," Stevens said, stroking Frank and Louie's soft fur as he sat on her lap purring. "So, he's ahead of the game; every day I just thank God I still have him."

Frank and Louie's breeder had taken him to the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University, 　　where Stevens was working at the time, to be euthanized when he was just a day old. Stevens offered to take him home, but experts told her not to get her hopes up.

Janus cats almost never survive, and most have congenital defects, including a cleft palate that makes it difficult for them to nurse and often causes them to slowly starve or get milk in their lungs and die of pneumonia.

The condition is the result of a genetic defect that triggers excessive production of a certain kind of protein. But Frank and Louie did not suffer 　　from most of the common Janus problems. Stevens used feeding tubes to nourish him for three months, hoping that would also save him 　　from the danger of choking on food going down two mouths

He is "very, very laid back, not afraid of people, very friendly and he's actually more of a dog than a cat," Stevens said. "He walks on a leash, he goes right in the car; he loves car rides."
