[예루살렘=AP/KNS] 이스라엘과 하마스가 11일(현지시각) 5년전 가자 지구로 납치된 이스라엘 병사 한 명을 이스라엘이 투쟁활동 혐의로 붙잡아둔 약 1,000명의 팔레스타인인들과 교환하겠다고 밝혔다.

이스라엘 총리 벤자민 네타냐후와 하마스 지도자 칼레드 마샬이 TV 방송을 통해 협정 사실을 밝힌 후 이어진 3시간 동안의 토론이 끝난 뒤, 이스라엘 정부는 12일 오전 이번 협정을 승인했다.

네타냐후 대통령은 포로로 잡혀있는 군인인 길라드 샬리트 상병이 수일 내 고국으로 돌아올 것이라 전했다. 한편 마샬은 이번 협상을 승리로 묘사하며 팔레스타인 포로들이 두 달간 두 번의 단계에 거쳐 석방될 것이라 밝혔다.

JERUSALEM (AP) -- In a much-anticipated prisoner ex　　change that could have broad implications, Israel and Hamas on Tuesday announced that an Israeli soldier abducted to Gaza five years ago would be swapped for about 1,000 Palestinians held by Israel and accused of militant activity.

Israel's government approved the deal early Wednesday following a three-hour debate after both Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Hamas leader Khaled Mashaal announced the agreement in televised comments.

Netanyahu said the captured soldier, Sgt. Gilad Schalit, would return home within days. Mashaal, portraying the agreement as a victory, said the Palestinian prisoners would be freed in two stages over two months.
