[베이징=AP/KNS] 중국의 한 탄광에서 소규모 지진이 발생한 이후 갑자기 바위가 폭발해 4명의 광부가 사망하고 57명이 탄광에 갇혔다고 4일(현지시각) 국영 뉴스 통신사가 밝혔다.

이 사고는 3일 저녁 헤난 지방의 산멘샤시(市)에서 75명의 광부들이 수갱에서 작업을 하던 중 발생한 것이었다고 신화통신사는 전했다. 그 중 14명이 탈출했다.

중국 근로안전청 웹사이트에 따르면 찬큐 탄광은 헤난에서 가장 큰 국영 석탄 기업인 이마 석탄 그룹 소유이다. 신화통신은 산멘샤 동부에서 진도 2.9의 지진이 발생했으며 약 30분 뒤 바위가 폭발했다고 전했다.

‘암반 돌파’라 불리는 이 현상은 광산 벽에 여러 겹의 토양을 눌러 다질 때 일어나는 것으로 보존된 에너지가 갑작스럽게 방출되어 큰 재앙을 불러일으킨다. 지보가 폭발해 바위나 석탄 덩어리가 위험한 미사일로 바뀔 수 있고 그 충격파 만으로도 생명이 위험할 수 있다.

BEIJING (AP) -- A sudden explosion of rock in a coal mine in central China following a small earthquake killed four miners and trapped 57 others, a state news agency reported Friday.

The accident in the coal mine in the city of Sanmenxia in Henan province occurred Thursday evening when 75 miners were working in the shaft, the official Xinhua News Agency said. Fourteen workers escaped.

The Qianqiu Coal Mine belongs to Yima Coal 　　Group, a large state-owned coal company in Henan, the State Administration of Work Safety said on its website. Xinhua said a magnitude-2.9 earthquake occurred to the east of Sanmenxia and that the rock explosion happened about 30 minutes later.

The phenomenon known as a "rock burst" occurs when settling layers of earth bear down on the walls of a mine and result in a sudden, catastrophic release of stored energy. Exploding pillars can turn chunks of rock or coal into deadly missiles, and the shock waves alone can be lethal.
